Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but we rather have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.Aristotle
High Performance Habits and How to Become Extraordinary
I first stumbled upon the work of Brendon Burchard around 2016. After taking some of his online courses, I attended the High Performance Academy live event in California. It would be an understatement to say that HPA and what I learned from Brendon’s earlier books such as The Charge changed the trajectory of my life.
Burchard and his colleagues at the High Performance Institute studied over 1.6 million high performers and personal development students in 195 countries over more than a decade to find out what habits of high performers predicted not only success but also long-term satisfaction and happiness in life and relationships. The six main habits that emerged are as follows: seek clarity, generate energy, raise necessity, increase productivity, develop influence, demonstrate courage.
These 6 habits are the foundation of High Performance Coaching as well as the book, High Performance Habits. I have not only been an HP client, but my life was impacted so greatly by these principles that I became a HP coach myself.
Do you want to get more done? Be a better leader? Live with purpose instead of just drifting through life doing work you don’t love? Have more joy or confidence?
High Performance Habits will show you how to get there. Every chapter explains each concept, why it’s important, and how to implement the right mindset and habits in your life. Throughout the book, there are prompts so that you can start applying what you’ve learned, downloadable worksheets, exercises, and questionnaires to help you learn how to apply the principles and find clarity (instead of confusion) about where your life is going and what you want out of it.
Although the title sounds like it’s only for CEO’s, athletes, and celebrities, this book is for anyone who wants to live a life filled with less stress and more joy. It’s for the mom or dad who just wants to be the best parent possible, the spouse or partner who wants a rich and fulfilling relationship, the entrepreneur who wants to put out more quality work in less time with more fulfillment, or the mid-level manager who wants more satisfaction in leading his or her team and feeling great while doing it.
Obviously, as a Certified High Performance Coach, I recommend this book as a must-read for everyone. If you’re interested in going deeper with these concepts, send me an email at email@example.com.
What You’ll Learn
The six High Performance Habits are as follows:
- Seek Clarity
- Generate Energy
- Raise Necessity
- Increase Productivity
- Develop Influence
- Demonstrate Courage
The vast majority of people drift through life, and statistics also show us that somewhere between 75-85% of people aren’t satisfied at their jobs and don’t love what they do.
The first step in living a life of meaning is to get clarity on who you are, where you’re going, and why.
Next, you’ll learn strategies to build habits on having more energy. This means not only better health habits, but also learning how to generate energy from within.
The third habit, raising necessity, is all about who needs you to bring your A-game, why, accountability, and how to elevate the need for higher performance in your life. Who are you hanging with? Have you defined what’s important to you? What’s necessary to achieve a goal or dream, and how do you set yourself up to achieve it . . . no matter what?
Then there’s productivity. This one speaks for itself and may be one of the most talked-about concepts out there. But what does it really mean? You’ll drill down into time-wasters, get tools on how to get more done in less time based on how our brains and bodies function, and how to track your progress.
In addition, successful people know that they can’t get to the highest levels alone. Having influence and support is crucial to success. Do you know how to ask for help? Do you have the support of your boss, co-workers, partner, or friends? Have you developed the skills to lead a team that really wants to get behind your idea?
Finally, there is courage. Fear may be the #1 thing that holds us back from our full potential, our dreams, and our desires. Fear of what people will think. Fear of failure. Fear of the unknown. Fear of success even. How do we move past the fear? How do we cope with feelings of fear? What kind of mindset do we need to have to feel the fear but keep moving forward anyway?
All these concepts are laid out in clear language. Then a roadmap for sustaining success is covered in the last section of the book. Learning how to have great habits and then being able to sustain them consistently over long periods of time while enjoying a satisfying and happy life is the key. Avoiding the traps along the journey is also covered My favorite subject is in this section: the three C’s of Confidence.
Buy this one for your bookshelf and mark it all up. Dog-ear the pages. Write in the margins. It’s a working manual for how to live your best life possible.
